What Is Single-Stream Recycling? What Items Are Accepted?

Also referred to as mixed recycling, single-stream recycling makes up most of Massachusetts’ recycling efforts today because of its cost efficiency and convenience. In this program, many types of recyclable materials are collected together in a single recycling cart for processing at a nearby material recovery facility. Our state’s single-stream recycling program accepts the following non-hazardous items:

  • Cardboard (flattened)
  • Newspapers, magazines, and inserts
  • Mail, junk mail, and envelopes
  • Boxboard and paper cartons (cereal boxes, etc.)
  • Office papers and file folders
  • Plastic containers (#1-#7) and large, rigid plastics
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal and tin (aluminum and metal cans)

Unacceptable items include plastic bags, soiled paper or cardboard products, plastics without a number, Styrofoam cups or packing materials, light bulbs, soiled tin cans, juice boxes or pouches, ceramic dishes or dinnerware, windowpane or windshield glass, mirrors, and sheet glass. Download our Residential Single-Stream Recycling Guide for more details about what’s acceptable in this recycling program.

What Are the Benefits of Residential Single-Stream Recycling?

Single-stream recycling programs benefit the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and fuel waste, while conserving more valuable natural resources. They also benefit Ashland residents by making home recycling services more convenient than ever. You won’t have the hassle of sorting your recyclable items by category, nor do you have to transport your items to a recycling facility. All recyclable materials are placed in one convenient recycling cart and collected by B-P Trucking, Inc. We have 32-, 64-, and 96-gallon trash and recycling carts available to accommodate your specific needs. You’ll save time and money, thanks to our innovative single-stream recycling program!

How Are Single-Stream Materials Recycled and Processed?

Once we collect your recyclables, they’re transported to the nearest material recovery facility. Here, they’re sorted via manual, mechanical, or magnetic means until they can be processed into raw manufacturing materials and sold to create new products. Single-stream recycling initiatives keep recyclables as clean as possible to minimize contamination as they’re being processed. Broken glass, shredded paper, or loose bottle caps usually slip through machinery gaps and are collected as residue to be disposed of properly afterward. However, material recovery facilities were designed to sort and process acceptable materials only. Unacceptable items, such as plastic bags, may become tangled inside the sorting equipment, jeopardizing recycling facility workers’ safety and increasing the program’s costs if repairs are needed. This is why it’s critical not to include unacceptable items in your recycling carts.

Tips for Making the Most of Single-Stream Recycling

If you follow these helpful tips, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits of single-stream recycling in no time:

  • We offer cardboard recycling services for homeowners. However, we ask that you please flatten all cardboard boxes before putting them inside your recycling cart.
  • Always keep your trash separate from your single-stream recycling cart.
  • No hazardous waste will be accepted. If in doubt, throw it out in your regular trash!
  • If recycling bottles or cans, ensure they are dry and empty first. There should not be any food or liquid residue found anywhere inside them.
  • Inspect your recycling cart regularly to ensure it’s contamination-free and does not contain any unacceptable items.
  • Be sure to have your recycling cart curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day. We’ll let you know our pickup schedule in your area.
  • Don’t overfill your recycling cart. Make sure everything is inside it without any overfill, as items outside the cart may not be collected by our crew. Don’t put items inside bags.
  • If you need a new recycling cart, be sure to let the B-P Trucking, Inc. team know immediately!
